“Kids always get it right”
Like many others, last week I was trying to soak up the last days of summer break with my daughters Mak (10) and Quinn (7). A road trip had taken us near Harmony, PA and we stopped into a historic cabin that now holds a nonprofit who showcases weaving, crocheting, etc. Along with a really cool, big, and old loom, they had a smaller one that people could use and be taught on. Two really amazing volunteers used it to teach my daughters how to weave and the girls were absolutely entranced by it.
After they were done with their lessons, I thanked the wonderful volunteers and as I started to walk away, one of them looked at the work on the loom and said, “Kids always get it right”. Okay…she had me intrigued. I turned around and asked what she meant. She showed me the perfect, crisp lines my young daughters had just created on the cloth and then showed me the work that was done before them. The not so perfect work done by adults that had tried the loom in the days and weeks earlier. She followed up with, “kids get it right almost every time.” I asked her why and she replied, “Adults sit down and have an expectation, or a hesitation, and they worry about what it should look like. Kids just do it.” Boy if that isn’t the truth!
Fear and hesitation does often mess things up for us, or worse prevents us from doing something all together. This random, magical visit was a great reminder of what a mental game life can be and sometimes you just have to go for it.
Fun Fact: My husband and I lived in Historic Harmony, PA for two years when we first got married. Our apartment was SO cool as it was a bank from the 1800’s. I highly recommend checking out the area (about 35 minutes North of Pittsburgh), and eating at The Harmony Inn.
